Research Interests

  • My research over the past 10 years has been devoted to the study of the neuronal circuits of the mammalian neocortex. I have examined issues such as the membrane properties of its neurons, the characteristics of its synapses and the rules of cortical organization. I strongly believe that this kind of functional, cellular information is essential for a full understanding of the mechanisms of cortical processing. All my work has been done using in vitro preparations, and in recent years I have used the specialized thalamocortical slice to study the physiology and organization of connectivity between the thalamus and cortex. I use a combination of electrophysiolgical recordings and morphological techniques.
