Framework

The format of this course has been changed to accommodate the changing circumstances, a post-Covid pandemic reality and, as of last year, war and a significant change in the student population. This forced us to develop some new teaching resources for the course, which are now on-line. Altogether, it means that we can spend more time together on how Molecular Biology is changing Medicine and less on the process of ... mmm, Transcription, for instance.
The basic structure of the 'M' in MCB is shown above. The module topics fit into two categories: Reviewing the Core Processes and The Human Genome in Sickness and Health (HGISH). The review modules are just that. All you have been exposed to fundamental molecular biology in your studies. But because we build on this foundation, and because of, eventually your licensing exams, you must be up to speed on it. The resources for you to decide if you are 'at speed' or to help you refresh are complete and organized. The review is self-study, but it does include a set of tutorials to address any problems that persist. The HGISH modules are run live. Each one has at least one classroom discussion session and most have team challenge sessions. Classroom attendence for these is mandatory.. Feedback on the material in both topic sets is ongoing; almost all the material covered in either will be used to generate mandatory quizzes and assignments along the way.
The topics in both sets and their ordering is listed in the course Moodle. Moodle contains the more fluid information - material that changes from year to year; this Web site contains the more stable material. You need to use both. The primary hard-copy learning resource is 'Molecular Biology of the Cell, 6th ed.' (aka. 'Alberts') It is very well written. I strongly recommend that you get a copy. Use the Learning Guides associated with each topic in this course web site to focus your attention. Additional learning resources are available through the topic web pages, including narrated animations. Be careful of the Web - WWW also means Wild Wild West - you can find anything out there. The textbook has been written, updated, and proofed by recognized experts and corrected on the basis of comments from thousands of teachers.
